carsten nicolai has in recent years repeatedly brought visual experiments to canvas. also with reference to the uni-cycle: unidisplay, unicolor and unitape.
the new works are painting studies transferred to canvas primed with gesso. they are freely constructed pieces, drawn from an intuitive impulse. nicolai refers to a classical concept of painting, attempting to achieve the largest form using only the most minimal elements – small crystalline processes, translated from the digital to the analogue.
the layer-series is explicitly not intended to have any additional „layers“ of meaning, but to speak out exclusively through their highest form of abstraction.
